Title: Emerging data management tools and the future of databases Abstract: Stonebraker claimed a few years ago that "one size no longer fits all" in database management. Since then, this maxim has been proven true repeatedly. New techniques for data storage, query and processing have emerged and gained traction recently. Techniques including distributed key-value stores (SimpleDB and its analogues), columnar storage (Vertica and others) and MapReduce (Hadoop and proprietary versions) are now used to solve problems that would formerly have been the domain of conventional RDBMS products. How do these new technologies relate to one another, and to traditional RDBMS offerings? Will old-style database systems expand to include these techniques, or will the technical landscape continue to fragment as special-purpose systems emerge for specific workloads? Mike Stonebraker and Mike Olson have collaborated on projects including Postgres and Illustra. Lately, each has taken a stake in these emerging systems: Stonebraker in columnar storage with Vertica and Olson with Hadoop at Cloudera. We will discuss them, their similarities and their differences, and will talk about the likely future for data management.
